ROBERT P. TURNER

Robert Turner was born in Toronto on December 15, 1935. He has been a member of this Association since 1956 and was appointed to the Board in February 1966.

He assisted in the formation of the Metropolitan Mixed League in 1956 and is still a member of the league (42 years). During this time he has served in every officer capacity of the league.

Since joining the Board of Directors of the Greater Toronto Tenpin Bowling Association, Robert has served on every committee at one time or another and beginning in 1972 through 1976 was President. In 1976 he was elected to Life Membership of the GTTBA.

During the 1972-73 season Robert was elected Jurisdictional Director for Canada on the ABC Board of Directors and in this position, was also a member of the Canadian Tenpin Federation (CTF) Board of Directors.

In the late sixties he was a member of a committee that concluded the 1970-71 first joint year book of the Toronto Associations. During his term as President, he was approached by the Big Brothers of Metropolitan Toronto to unite the Five Pin and Tenpin Associations and to put into action the present “Bowl for Millions” program. For Big Brothers this continues to be their biggest fund-raiser.

In 1974 Robert was made an honorary Big Brother of Metropolitan Toronto. Also during this Presidency the three Associations moved into one shared facility at 1111 Finch Ave. W.

In 1982 the GTWBA presented Robert with its prestigious “Merit Award”.

As ABC Jurisdictional Director Robert served on various committees, i.e. education, tournament site and international competition. He was a delegate at two World Tenpin Meetings (FIQ) in London, England and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During this time period Robert was also a member of the Ontario Provincial Tenpin Bowling Association. He was Tournament Manager when the OPTBA held its tournament at Brunswick Mississauga in June 1979 which was the first time automatic scorekeeping equipment was used.

On March 16, 1990 Robert was elected Honorary Member of the ABC Board of Directors.

On March 9, 1997 he bowled in his 33rd ABC Championship Tournament. Over the years he has been captain for many teams at the Association, Provincial and ABC Championships, and was also responsible for giving bowlers tournament action at many other tournaments.

Over the years Robert Turner served all the Associations with a very high degree of distinction and has also given many bowlers his personal time and attention. It is for this that we are honoring him here this evening with his induction into our Hall of Fame.
