ORVILLE “ORV” ARMSTRONG
(1923 – 1989)

Orville Armstrong was known to everyone as just “Orv”. Orv was a 180 plus average bowler during the best part of his bowling career with one 700 series to his credit.

He started his administrative career in tenpin bowling when he was appointed to our Association Board of Directors in December 1961, as a Director. From that time until July 31, 1980 Orv was a member of the Board every year, with the exception of the 1965-66 season.

Other than that one season, Orv was a Director from 1961 to 1967 and part of that time served as Association Tournament Director and also was Association Delegate to the ABC Annual Meeting.

On August 1, 1967 Orv started a 3 year term as 1st Vice-President of the Association; on August 1, 1970 he commenced a 2 year term as President. Although he was much more than adequate in this capacity, he declined to stand for re-election, preferring instead, to retire gradually from the Board as Immediate Past President. This status lasted only one year. The Secretary-Treasurer elect in 1973 resigned before the season started and Orv agreed to accept an appointment to serve the 3 year term. In 1976 he agreed to stand for election as Secretary-Treasurer for a 1 year term to facilitate a change to a 2 year instead of a 3 year term of office. Having completed this term he was then elected for another 2 year term in 1977, thinking he would retire from the Board in 1979. It was not to be! The 1979 Secretary-Treasurer elect also resigned before the season started and Orv was prevailed upon to fill the first year of this two year term, finally retiring from the Board of Directors in 1980, nine years before his untimely death at age 66.

Orv also was on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Provincial Tenpin Bowling Association for several seasons, serving a 2 year term as President along the way. In addition he served several terms as Ontario Director on the Canadian Tenpin Federation Board of directors. Orv was a Life Member of both the Greater Toronto and Ontario Provincial Associations.
