MILTON H. WEBBER
(1897 – 1972)

Milt Webber was born in Wallingford, Connecticut and came to Canada at the age of 15. He made his first appearance on the Toronto tenpin bowling scene in 1941 at the age of 44 when he entered a team in the Toronto Tenpin League.

Although Milt Webber was a better than average bowler, until a heart attack in the late 50’s took him off the lanes permanently, his administrative ability was his strength. In 1942, one year after he became a bowler, he was elected Association 1st Vice-President. In 1943 he was elected President of the Association, a position which he held continuously until July 31, 1959. Through those early growing years of our Association, he was a driving force in the promotion of the Association and the game.

In 1959 Milt Webber was elected Executive Director of the American Bowling Congress, a position he held until his death in December 1972. He stepped down from the Association Presidency at this time to devote his full efforts to his ABC position. In 1960 he was elected to Life Membership in our Association and returned to serve another 3 year term as Association President in 1963, thus giving him a total of 19 years as our Association President.

In November 1962, Milt Webber was instrumental in creating the Ontario Provincial Tenpin Bowling Association and became its first President.

In his 14 years on the ABC board, Milt Webber’s most frequent committee assignment was to the International Competition Committee. He wanted Canadian bowlers to be eligible for international competition and in 1964 he founded an organization which he called the Canadian Tenpin Federation, which was recognized by the Federation Internationale Des Quilleurs (FIQ). Milt’s little organization had no money and only four officers of which he was President and ABC agreed to pay the FIQ membership dues for Canada. This was the forerunner of to-day’s Canadian Tenpin Federation which was founded in 1968, again mostly through Milt Webber’s efforts and guidance.

Over his 30 years of service Milton H. Webber served our Association and ABC with Ability and Proficiency and founded a Provincial and a Canadian Tenpin Organization along the way.
