R. HUGH CRAWFORD
(1925-1996)

Hugh Crawford was born in Kingston, Ontario, December 11, 1921. He has been a member of this Association since 1958 and was elected Secretary/Treasurer October 2, 1960, a position he served for the next 5 years.

In 1961 Hugh served as chairman of a committee along with Roy Swain and Loren Olsen to draw up the new by-laws of the Greater Toronto Tenpin Bowling Association at the direction of the ABC.

During the 1961-62 season the Association started to grow with the opening of Newtonbrook, Thorncliffe, Shea’s Rexdale and Shea’s Parkdale, as well as Holiday Bowl in Barrie. Thus Barrie became part of the GTTBA and membership climbed to 4735.

During the 1962 season the birth of the Ontario Provincial Tenpin Bowling Association took place with Hugh as Secretary/Treasurer. In this capacity he was responsible for writing the by-laws of the OPTBA.

In 1963 Hugh finally convinced the GTTBA board to move out of his house and into the Association’s first office in the Toronto Brick Company building at 1425 Bayview Ave.

In 1965 he was elected a Life Member of the GTTBA. In 1966 he was elected President of the GTTBA and served 4 years. In 1967 Hugh and Norma Crawford won the first Mixed Doubles Tournament and were the first to repeat the feat in 1969. In January 1969 he was named CTF National Tournament Director a position he served for 3 years.

October 1969 marked the first Annual Awards Dinner/Dance for the Toronto Association's, and due to the efforts of both presidents, Hugh Crawford and Bernice Murray, the event was a success.

In May 1996 Hugh was named to the OPTBA Hall of Fame and was the only Life Member of the Association who was not a past president.

Over the years Hugh captained many teams to league championships as well as association championships. He has introduced bowlers to their first taste of participating in the ABC Championships, and he has bowled in 30 consecutive ABC Championships starting in 1961 and ending 1990.

Hugh was instrumental in recording the first 75 years of this Association in a book completed for the fall of 1982.

Over the years Hugh Crawford has served all the Associations he has served on, with a very high degree of distinction and for this we are honoring him here this evening with his induction into our Hall of Fame.
