E. E. “ED” SUTHERLAND
(1902 – 1976)

Although we do not have much documented information concerning Ed Sutherland’s contributions to the game of tenpins and the Toronto Tenpin Association, as it was known in his time, in the field of administration, it is because of his election to the Executive Committee of the American Bowling Congress to serve a one year term as an Executive Director in the 1911-1912 season that he is being so honoured. He was the first Toronto bowler and the first Canadian bowler to hold such and administrative position.

Since ABC has never had the reputation of electing men to their executive group, who have had no experience at the local level, Ed Sutherland must have served our Association as President or Secretary/Treasurer in those early days between 1907-1912.

We do know that he became manager of the Canadian Bowling Club in Toronto in 1909 and was treasurer of the Athenaeums Bowling Association in 1911-1912. He also was team captain of several very good teams.

He also had considerable bowling ability, having recorded the first 700 series known to be bowled in Toronto on the first night of the 1905-06 season.

Ed was a member of one of the first two Toronto teams ever to participate in an ABC Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky in 1906. In later ABC Tournaments he captained teams which finished in the top ten. He also captained the Athenaeums team in the 1921 ABC Tournament in Buffalo, New York, where his team was the Toronto team out of the eight entries to cash other that the famous Saunders team of Toronto which won the team event that year.

Over his 20 to 30 years as a bowler Ed always seemed to excel. In the twenties when the 5 pin game stole the spotlight from 10 pins as well as many bowlers, Ed teamed with Herb Penoyer to enter a 3 game doubles tournament in Bill Karry's 5 pin event. They finished with a 1495 flat score to show the 5 pinners that they were very capable at that game as well.
