HERB PENOYER
(1886 – 1947)

Herb Penoyer’s first recorded appearance on the Toronto tenpin bowling scene was when he bowled for the Vodden team which challenged the Brunswicks for the McCallum Trophy in 1916 and lost.

The next year, in December 1917, he had joined the erstwhile Brunswicks, now known as Glidden Varnish team, and bowled with that team in defense of the McCallum Trophy, on several occasions. Later the team became the Saunders team.

In 1921 the Saunders team entered and won the American Bowling Congress Tournament in Buffalo, New York with a score of 3066, and Herb Penoyer earned the right to call himself one of the Toronto’s only 5 ABC Champions.

Herb bowled well contributing 635 to the team total, having entered the tournament with an average of 192. He also cashed in the doubles event with team captain Hartman.

However his best achievement aside from the team championship was his 18th place finish in the 9 game all events totals with 1832, having rolled 635 – 625 – 572. At this time Herb Penoyer was 35 years old.
